How to Open an SRS Account in Singapore: DBS vs OCBC vs UOB Step by Step

06 November 2026
Supplementary Retirement Scheme (SRS)Retirement

The number of SRS account holders in Singapore rose by 49,527 during 2025, from 466,849 to 516,376 at the end of December. Every one of those accounts was opened at one of three banks.

An SRS operator is the bank that holds your Supplementary Retirement Scheme account, receives your contributions and reports them to IRAS. DBS/POSB, OCBC and UOB are the only operators, and you may hold only one SRS account at any point in time. Whichever bank you pick, the contribution caps, tax relief and withdrawal rules are the same.

What changes from bank to bank is the application itself. DBS opens accounts instantly through digibank between 7am and 10pm daily, OCBC opens them instantly in its app for existing customers, and UOB's online form takes about four working days. Foreigners, who made up 6% of SRS account holders at the end of 2025, face the biggest differences.

You have three realistic routes: apply online with the bank you already use, apply online with DBS if you want the account the same day, or visit a branch if you are a foreigner at UOB or a new customer at OCBC. In each case the next step is the first contribution, which fixes your SRS retirement age.

This guide explains who can open an account and what to prepare, the exact application steps at DBS/POSB, OCBC and UOB, how long each takes, what the banks charge, how to make your first contribution and check your balance, how to move your account to another bank, and how to choose between the three.

How to open an SRS account at a glance

All three banks accept online applications from citizens and PRs. The differences are in speed, in what foreigners must do and in what the application asks for.

Before you apply: eligibility and documents

Eligibility comes from the scheme itself, so it is the same at every bank. You can open an SRS account if you are a Singapore Citizen, PR or foreigner aged 18 or above, not an undischarged bankrupt, with no other SRS account. DBS and UOB also require that you have no pending SRS application at another bank, so finish or withdraw one application before starting another.

Citizens and PRs

Most citizens and PRs need nothing beyond their usual banking login. DBS and OCBC applications draw on the personal details the bank already holds, and UOB pulls verified data through Myinfo with your Singpass. Have these ready:

  • your bank's digital banking login, or Singpass for UOB
  • your NRIC, if you apply at a branch
  • your CDP account number, if you apply through OCBC Internet Banking
  • the account you want to contribute from, if you plan to make a first contribution straight away at DBS

Foreigners

Foreigners have fewer online options and one extra step every year. OCBC branch applicants need a passport and a valid Employment Pass, S Pass or Student Pass, plus proof of address such as a phone bill, half-yearly CPF statement or bank statement. UOB does not accept online applications from foreigners, because Myinfo cannot provide all the verified data required.

The yearly declaration is what gives you the higher cap of S$35,700 a year for foreigners, against S$15,300 for citizens and PRs. At DBS you can make it through digibot, or at a branch with your passport and, if you work in Singapore, your Employment Pass or in-principle approval, and it must be repeated because the cap resets on 1 January.

Tax relief depends on being a tax resident for the Year of Assessment, which for most foreigners means staying or working in Singapore for at least 183 days in the previous calendar year.

Documents to prepare for an SRS application as a citizen, PR or foreigner

How to open an SRS account with DBS/POSB

DBS has the fastest route, and foreigners can apply online on the same terms as citizens and PRs. POSB customers use the same process, since POSB SRS accounts are opened through digibank or any DBS/POSB branch.

digibank online steps

  1. Log in to digibank online with your User ID and PIN.
  2. Complete the authentication.
  3. Click Apply on the left menu, then View all under Bank.
  4. Select Supplementary Retirement Scheme at the top, then Apply now under SRS account.
  5. Read the information and click Start.
  6. Check your personal details and choose a reference account for signature and address. To contribute now, click Yes, enter the amount and choose the account to pay from, then click Next.
  7. Verify the details and click Submit.

Service hours, branches and foreigners

Online opening runs from 7am to 10pm daily, and from 7am to 7pm on the last day of the month. That shorter window matters on 31 December 2026, when contributions through digibank also close at 7pm.

You can also open an account at any DBS or POSB branch with your NRIC or passport. Foreigners who apply online still make the yearly declaration, through digibot or at a branch, before contributing more than the citizen and PR cap.

Contributing during the application is handy late in the year, since opening and funding the account in one sitting saves a second login before the year-end cut-off.

How to open an SRS account with OCBC

OCBC suits investors who already bank with it. Existing customers can open an SRS account instantly in the OCBC app or through Internet Banking, while new customers first open a 360 Account or another current or savings account, or apply at a branch.

OCBC app steps

  1. Log in with your access code and PIN, or fingerprint ID, then tap the left menu and select Apply.
  2. Tap SRS Account.
  3. Enter the one-time password sent to you by SMS.
  4. Confirm your account address.
  5. Enter your personal details.
  6. Review and agree to the terms and conditions.
  7. Review all the details and submit.

OCBC Internet Banking steps

  1. Log in with your access code and PIN.
  2. Click Open an account, then SRS account under Investment account.
  3. Enter the SMS one-time password.
  4. Choose to open an additional account and confirm your mailing address.
  5. Select your occupation and self-employment status, and fill in your CDP account number.
  6. Review and agree to the terms and conditions, then confirm and submit.

The desktop form asks for a CDP account number, so open one with CDP first if you apply that way and do not have one. A CDP account is also where SGX shares bought with SRS money are recorded, which matters if you plan to hold SGX stocks or REITs later.

One OCBC quirk affects how you contribute after opening: standing instructions are not available for SRS, so each contribution is a manual transfer through the app, Internet Banking, cash or cheque.

How to open an SRS account with UOB

UOB runs SRS applications through an online form that pulls your details from Myinfo, and the bank recommends Google Chrome for the Myinfo login. It is open to citizens and PRs; foreigners apply at a branch.

UOB online steps with Myinfo

  1. Start the SRS application from UOB's SRS page and log in to Myinfo with Singpass.
  2. Review the personal details Myinfo provides and complete the application form.
  3. Submit the application and keep the application ID shown on screen and in the confirmation email.
  4. Wait for processing, which typically takes 4 working days.
  5. Look out for your account number, which is mailed to your UOB-registered address within 7 working days and is never included in the email.

If you already use UOB Personal Internet Banking or UOB TMRW, you can find the account details there, or ask through 24-hour Phone Banking or at any branch. You can also check the progress of an application by quoting your application ID to Phone Banking.

If the online application fails, or you are a foreigner

An unsuccessful online application moves to a branch, where you bring your physical NRIC. Foreigners apply at a branch from the start.

UOB's slower route matters for year-end planning. An application submitted in the last week of December may not be processed before 31 December, and without an account number there is nothing to contribute to. Contributions through UOB TMRW close at 7pm on the last business day, so apply by early December if you want relief for YA 2027.

How long each bank takes to open an SRS account

What it costs to open and run an SRS account

DBS, OCBC and UOB list no account-opening fee on their SRS pages. Their charges apply to transactions inside the account and are small next to the costs of the investments themselves.

At DBS, other SRS transaction charges are waived until further notice, but third-party charges such as CDP fees and product sales charges still apply. The OCBC share charge only bites if you move SGX holdings out of the account. Withdrawing or transferring three counters costs S$0.35 plus S$10 per counter, plus GST, or S$31.05 before GST.

Uninvested cash is the hidden cost. At 0.05% a year at DBS, S$15,300 left in the account earns S$7.65 in a year. Our SRS interest rate guide compares that with T-bills, savings bonds and cash funds.

How to make your first SRS contribution

Tax relief comes from contributions, and your prescribed retirement age is fixed by the statutory retirement age on the date of your first contribution, which has been 64 since 1 July 2026.

Contributions must be in Singapore dollars, and each bank only accepts them through its own channels. At DBS, SRS contributions are accepted only in SGD, and an amount above your remaining limit is refunded in full. OCBC and UOB do not accept SRS contributions through other banks' internet or mobile banking, so move the money into an account at your operator bank first.

A contribution received by the cut-off earns relief in YA 2027, provided you are a tax resident for that year. Our top-up guide walks through each bank's contribution screens and the most common year-end problems.

How to check your SRS balance and history

Your SRS balance sits with the operator bank, even when the money is invested elsewhere. Each bank shows it in a slightly different place.

DBS/POSB. Log in to digibank to see your maximum contribution amount, total contributions to date, remaining contribution limit and cash balance. The same page shows the market valuation and unrealised profit or loss of investments held through the account.

OCBC. Successful contributions appear in your SRS Transaction History one business day after processing, and you get an email if a request fails.

UOB. Your SRS account details are available in UOB Personal Internet Banking and UOB TMRW, or through Phone Banking and branches.

Investment platforms show only what they hold for you. If you invest SRS money through a broker or robo-advisor, the bank shows the cash released and returned, and the platform shows the value of the holdings, so add the two together for your full SRS position.

There is nothing to send IRAS. Your operator reports your contributions, and the relief is applied automatically under "Deductions, Tax Relief and Rebates" in your assessment. Foreigners and PRs leaving Singapore can ask the operator for a statement of contributions and withdrawals for tax clearance.

How to move your SRS account to another bank

Changing banks is done by transfer. Opening a second SRS account while the first is still open breaks the one-account rule, and holding accounts with more than one operator is an offence.

The new bank runs the move. At DBS, you complete the SRS Account Transfer form, the SRS Account Application form and, for foreigners, the SRS Annual Declaration form at a branch, and a standard transfer takes 7 working days. OCBC takes the Account Transfer form, SRS Account Application form and Declaration form at any branch, and UOB handles transfers at its branches.

Before you ask for a transfer, note that shares may carry per-counter transfer charges at the old bank, unit trusts and insurance may need the product provider's help, and any platform linked to your old SRS account will need your new account details. If you have already started penalty-free withdrawals, you cannot make new contributions after the transfer.

Which SRS bank should you choose?

The bank you pick affects how quickly you get started, how you contribute and what you pay on a few transactions.

For most people the deciding factor is the bank they already use. With an existing login, a savings account at the same bank to contribute from and an app you open every week, the yearly contribution is more likely to happen.

Linking your new SRS account to an investment platform

Once the account is open and funded, you can invest through the bank or through any broker or platform that accepts SRS money. The platform needs your SRS account number and your authorisation for the bank to release funds; sale proceeds then return to the same SRS account.

Banks offer their own SRS menus, such as Singapore Savings Bonds, deposits, unit trusts and single-premium insurance. Brokers such as POEMS let SRS money buy SGX-listed shares, ETFs and bonds, and robo-advisors run managed portfolios funded by SRS. Our pillar guide to SRS accounts compares what each route can buy, and the robo-advisor comparison covers their SRS fees.

Invest your SRS with StashAway

With your new SRS account open, you can link it to StashAway by choosing SRS as the funding source for a portfolio. StashAway then requests the money from your DBS, OCBC or UOB account on a schedule you set.

Managed portfolios such as General Investing and Income Investing cost 0.2% to 0.8% a year depending on your balance. If you would rather pick individual US-listed and UCITS ETFs, ETF Explorer with SRS charges US$1 (excl. GST) per buy or sell order, with no monthly fee.

Portfolio values move with markets, so you could get back less than you invest.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what people ask while opening their first SRS account.

Can I open an SRS account with POSB instead of DBS?

Yes. POSB customers open SRS accounts through digibank online or at any DBS/POSB branch, using the same steps and service hours as DBS, which is the operator bank.

Is opening an SRS account free?

None of the three banks lists an account-opening fee on its SRS page. You pay transaction charges later, such as S$2 per Singapore Savings Bond application or redemption at DBS and OCBC.

How long does UOB take to open an SRS account?

Online applications typically take 4 working days to process. The account number arrives by post within 7 working days, or you can see it earlier in UOB TMRW or Personal Internet Banking if you use them.

Can I open an SRS account at the weekend?

At DBS, online opening runs from 7am to 10pm every day, including weekends. UOB counts its processing time in working days, so a weekend application starts moving on the next working day.

Can foreigners apply online?

At DBS, yes, through digibank. OCBC lets existing customers apply in its app, and UOB requires foreigners to apply at a branch.

Do I need a CDP account to open an SRS account?

The OCBC Internet Banking application asks for a CDP account number. A CDP account is also needed if you plan to buy SGX shares, REITs or ETFs with your SRS money through a broker.

What happens if I apply at two banks at once?

DBS and UOB reject an application when you have a pending SRS application at another bank. Withdraw or complete the first application before starting another, since you can hold only one SRS account.
